Even Mermaids Have Shopping Problems Update 01 + Life Update

Aloha, chickadees. I shan't even apologize for the random greeting - it's coot. Today on The Mod Mermaid it's all about updates; spending ban updates, as well as general life updates, as you may or may not have noticed... I haven't blogged in a good week (which is a LONG time in blogger talk) I think I'll start with what's been going on in my life that may or may not send me into a shopping-to-make-it-all-go-away spiral. I initially wanted to take a small break because classes were starting and I wasn't sure how to approach keeping up my blog, YouTube channel, and my class load. I also got a job (hooray!) which was very good news but at the same time I was like "AH, MY BLOG?! When am I going to have time?!" All of that coupled with some strange sadness towards my blog and just being plain unhappy with it. It's not that I've run out of ideas for fun posts - I just didn't feel like writing them. So I figured I'd just take a little break from blogging until classes started and I could get everything sorted, then I'll be able to see when I can blog/write up scheduled posts. Well, here's where things turned for the worst. I was so excited for school and even had my backpack packed days in advance, little did I know (excuse the caps) I WASN'T GOING TO BE GOING. My school failed to properly notify me that my tutition fees were due and did me the lovely courtesy of dropping me from every class I registered for. Not only that, none of my potential professors wanted to over tally me into their class. Sure, I could've gone through the scraps and created a new schedule but I'm a Junior and pretty much done with Gen. Eds. and just waiting to take higher level Psychology classes. The only classes available to me were classes I've already done or super duper high level Psych classes that I can't take yet. Sooo ... it looks like I won't be going to classes until February, which to a normal student is like YEAH! but I was actually looking forward to it, and now it looks like I shan't be graduating on time. Swell news, you can imagine. I was already not in the right head space and this just threw me into a spiral of WHAT NOW?! I still don't know 'what now?' but I'm just thankful I have a new job to keep me busy. I don't think I could take another 3 months just sitting at home *breathes in* That's my little life update - I'm bummed, but back and now we can move on to the spending ban update! I promise this life update wasn't a way to distract you from all the spending I did, haha!!
Okay, so two weeks ago I start my little spending ban titled Even Mermaids Have Shopping Problems in the hopes of, mainly, sorting out my need to buy the latest and sometimes not so greatest makeup bits. Right now I'm thinking "so far, so good" and I'm feeling quite confident that I'll make it the 100 days sticking within my rules. Like I mentioned in my life update, I did get a job, but before that there was an interview that required I wear 'business attire' which, embarrassingly enough, I didn't have any. Not even a blazer! So I was forced to break two rules:
  • No spending on clothes or shoes.
  • BIGGEST RULE :: No letting my mom treat me to beauty purchases, whatsoever, and no unnecessary clothing purchases..
Yeah, I broke my biggest rule, but hey, now that I'm reading it, I did say unnecessary and getting a business dress and blazer were quite necessary. I felt bad, as I always do when my mom so kindly treats me to things, but if I didn't have this proper outfit I don't think I would have gotten the job! My mom even said "you gotta spend money, to make money" which is true, but I think we were in the wrong context, haha. I also broke my ...
  • No spending on hair care, unless, I run out of shampoo/conditioner completely and/or I need a dry shampoo refill.
... rule, but for a very good reason! My scalp is dry as the sahara and it's been itching and scabbing and I haven't the slightest idea why. I've never experienced something like that so I needed to run out and get dandruff shampoo (Got a clue? Get the blue. Yup, Selsun Blue, haha) I have no regrets because 86 more days of me scratching my head? No, thanks! Other than those necessary buys, I've been sticking to my rules quite nicely. It'll probably get harder as the holidays approach and brands come out with their new collections ... probably? It will. I know it will. I'm already salivating over MAC's new Retro Matte collection. All bright lipsticks?! Someone is trying to break me... but I shan't!

What have you guys been up to? It's only been a week, but it feels like an eternity since so much has happened! Thanks for sticking around to the end of the post :) I know it was a long one, haha! Hopefully my next spending ban updates won't come with a long winding life update, as well! Hope you all enjoy the extended weekend!

  1. It sucks your school didn't notify you! At least you have a job to keep you busy till you can start in September.
Hopefully then they'll notify you properly :) x

    1. Thanks, Daphne! Haha, I think it's okay to break a few rules. It's like going on a diet - if you completely cut yourself off you're more likely to cave and over indulge! Start fresh, I won't tell ;D

  3. Oh no! It's a good you've got a job though. After I finished college I took a year out before going to university and I had nothing to do for 10 months!! No job nothing and it drove me insane! haha

    1. Haha, I got confused for a second and was like ... wait, college and uni are not the same?! I looked it up, haha! But yeah, a break is nice for a week, or two maybe but after that it's like *hangs upside down on sofa* BLEH, I'M BORED!!

  4. Universities are the worst! I was supposed to graduate this past summer, but my dumb advisor failed to tell me that the university added on more requirements for my degree (that I could have easily done during the summer), so now I have to wait until May to graduate. Blech. Well, at least you have a job and you can make some extra money! :)

    1. Oh my lanta, that's terrible! Communication at such "esteemed" establishments should be 10 times better than they are. I knew more about things going on in high school than I do in college, and that was free!! At least we're on the right track now and know that we're adults and now have to figure out things for ourselves, blech XD

  5. Can't believe your school did that it's so horrible! glad to hear you're doing well with the spending ban though. If it helps I'm pretty sure the new Mac retro lipsticks are permanent!

  6. Your school sucks! Congrats on the job though, and no worries about the necessary wardrobe update and shampoo. Those were definitely needed. :)

  7. That really sucks about your school :( I was forced to take some time off but when I got back, I was more motivated than ever! Sometimes you may actually need a little break. Make the best of it.
Oh, about the "no shopping ban," I'm doing a giveaway on my blog. You should probably enter. You're rules don't say anything about winning a giveaway prize, do they? lol

    1. I'm hoping it turns into one of those situations where it was just what I needed! The only thing that sucks is that I was fully prepared and ready to go back after a long summer. Ah, well :/ & haha, I saw it last night but for some reason it wouldn't let me enter so I'm running over right now! That's a great tip for anyone on a spending ban, just make giveaways your shopping sprees, haha - that's terrible XD

  8. GUHHHHHH Jess I just sent you a text, I hope everything is okay even though... well, clearly things aren't so perfect. In any case you're doing SO good on your spending ban (those sound like VERY necessary purchases to me) so many pats on the back for you and fist bumps full of exploding mermaid glitter <3 <3 <3

  9. O jeez, the school situations sounds terrible! It's totally something that would happen at my uni. It's the most disorganized institution ever! At least you can start in February. In my country, you can only start in October, and if you don't, you lose the whole year.

P.S. We now have one more thing in common. I'm not going to school either, haha. But it was my own decision. I'm only 3 exams away from graduating and we have this option that we can take a year off before graduating while still have all the student benefits. So I decided to take a year off and do some things I've never had time for before... :)

    1. WOW. I cannot imagine being completely unprepared to be off from school for an entire year! School has been such a huge part of my life that it's like ... WHO AM I?! without school!

Haha, hooray, Sandra! I remember you told me you had like 18 exams to finish and I was already half way through my break. At least you get a small chance to relax and work on different things :) That's so cool that they let you do that and encourage! Here, I keep getting called a drop out, haha! Hope it's a productive time off for the both of us :)
